Travel Tips
How to get there
The airport is Lic. Gustavo Díaz Ordaz International (PVR), about 7–10 km north of downtown (15–25 min by car, depending on traffic). There are nonstop flights from Mexico City, Guadalajara, and Monterrey, and many frequencies from the United States and Canada. From much of Latam the pattern is a connection in MEX or GDL. MEX–PVR is about 1 h 30 min.
Compare flights to Puerto Vallarta on Planetrip: it is worth checking MEX and GDL in case a consolidated fare beats an awkward “direct” with two odd stops.
At PVR the authorized taxi is paid at the arrivals desk. Uber does run in the city; pickup at the terminal is often not allowed. The ATM airport bus is cheap but awkward with luggage.
Overland from Guadalajara: 4–5 hours on the toll highway. Buses (ETN, Primera Plus and similar) run that route.
Best dates and flights
High season (December–April): dry, 26–30 °C, whales in winter, peak hotel and flight prices. Holy Week fills beaches and PVR.
Shoulder (November and May): a better climate/price mix. November overlaps the Gourmet Festival and, at the end of October, Day of the Dead.
Low season (June–October): afternoon rains, more humidity, lower rates. September is often wetter; Pacific hurricanes are not weekly, but you should watch the forecast. The sea is warmer.
Cheap flights to Puerto Vallarta often show up in the rainy season and midweek. Northern-hemisphere school summer still pushes July–August fares even when it rains.
Getting around
Airport to downtown: authorized taxi ~350–450 MXN (up to four people, indicative). In town, taxi or Uber 80–150 MXN on typical urban hops. Walking is enough between the malecón, the Cuale, and the Zona Romántica. For Yelapa, pay the boat round trip and ask for the last return.
Rent a car only if you go to Mismaloya, the botanical garden, Punta Mita, or Sayulita. On downtown cobblestones a car is a nuisance.
Travel notes
Vallarta grew as a fishing town and opened to bay tourism in the mid-20th century; the malecón was rebuilt after hurricanes (Kenna, 2002) and renovated later. What sets it apart from an isolated resort is being able to walk from the church to the pier and the next day be in a cove with no road.
Carry some pesos in cash for boats, markets, and small taxis. There are ATMs downtown and in the hotel zone. The area code is +52 322. Drink with a plan: tequila here is everyday, not only a souvenir. At Marietas and Los Arcos respect the park: reef-safe sunscreen if you use it, and never feed wildlife.
If you use the flight comparator, lock PVR round-trip before you lock a high-season hotel: air seats fill first.
Connections from Latam
From Bogotá, Lima, Buenos Aires, or Santiago you almost always connect in MEX or a U.S. hub. Consider an overnight in Mexico City and a morning PVR flight: you arrive in daylight for the taxi and check-in. Guadalajara (GDL) is an alternative if you find a cheap regional flight and the bus or a short GDL–PVR hop works.
Change some cash on arrival; not every boatman takes cards. Tipping in tourist-zone restaurants is often 10–15% if it is not included. Tap water is not the safest bet if you have just arrived.
At Holy Week and Christmas book flight and hotel together: PVR saturates. In September keep a backup of a covered beach or a gallery if a tropical watch shuts down boats.
